Information Design

Information design is about making sure that the information and functionality you present is arranged, organized, and presented so your customers can easily and accurately understand it.

The term information design predates digital-design philosophies by several decades. At first, this term usually applied to library-science fields of study—such as codifying the information placards that accompany museum exhibits.

My favorite definition of information design is that it’s about sense making—that is, making sense of a bunch of information by the way it is organized, and otherwise designed.

Information design is also about consistency, and re-use. Every page and view of your digital product, across platforms, should behave the same way so users can more quickly, easily, and accurately use the functions and read the information.

So, information design is about creating templates, that guide the design of the rest of the products. These can even be integrated with the *design system* and the *information architecture* pieces of work, to assure it is communicated to everyone on the team, and part of the record of design decisions for use in the future.
